EAWLS spreads wings to Arusha
In a previous Newsletter, we told you that EAWLS would soon be establishing a presence in Arusha through the support of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). This has now been achieved. On May 24, the EAWLS, FAO and Help Self Help Centre - another organization funded by FAO - participated in a signing ceremony of two projects which will be managed from Arusha. The EAWLS project aims to monitor the trade in illegal wood and wood products in Kenya and Tanzania border points.
Issues of cross-border trade in wood and wood products are critical especially with the open border policy in the region under the East Africa Community... Read More

National Geographic honours Kenyan conservation trailblazers

The National Geographic Society has named two Kenyan conservationists, Dr. Paula Kahumbu and Dr. Dino Martins, to the 2011 class of National Geographic Emerging Explorers. The two Kenyans are among fourteen such visionary, young trailblazers from around the world recognised this year.

New alliance to boost conservation of Chyulu Hills

Conservation managers within the Chyulu ecosystem have come together to form the Chyulu Hills Conservation Working Group – a platform for cooperation in pursuing issues of mutual interest in the conservation of this important resource.

EAWLS helps modernise beekeeping on Kenyan coast

EAWLS and the Ministry of Livestock in Msambweni District have come together to help modernise beekeeping in Vanga, on the Kenyan coast, to help fight poverty.
The two held workshops on May 4-7 on the use of modern beekeeping equipment and technology to empower 30 people to use bees as a way of making money.
Wild bees are seen by many people as nasty insects which are harmful to people. Read More

Facebook and Twitter come to the rescue of Mount Kenya

Tupande Pamoja has partnered with Africa Point – a specialist travel agent – to launch an extensive social media campaign to raise awareness about conservation of Mount Kenya and at the same time plant 100,000 trees inside the Mount Kenya forests.
In this innovative campaign, Africa Point and partners will donate a seedling to the Tupande Pamoja Initiative for every social media mention (Tweet or Facebook “Like”) made in raising awareness about Mt Kenya conservation through the official campaign page. Read More
