The information
gathered will be used for future research and formulation of a comprehensive
conservation strategy for the Kenyan Cheetah. Work is implemented by
EAWLS and CCFK. The country was divided into three zones referred to
as Priority Areas.
1. To
determine areas of Cheetah presence /absence in Kenya and assess local
peoples’ attitudes towards its conservation.
2. To determine Cheetah trends by analyzing and comparing previous
information in areas with viable Cheetah population for recommendations
of further research and conservation strategies.
Methodology
The research adapted different methods as identified during a workshop
held in 2004 in Arusha by Global Cheetah Census Committee:
Literature
reviews:
• Assessment of previous surveys
• KWS conflict data and occurrence book searches and analysis
Field
work:
• Field observations
• Interviews and
• Photgraphy
Priority
1 Area
This area covered Southwestern part of Kenya - Narok, Kajiado,
Nairobi, Nakuru, Tsavo West and Chyulu National Parks and their
immediate surroundings. The exercise was conducted in 2004/2005,
with a funding from EAWLS-Stichting Netherlands and in-kind donations
from well wishers.

Outcomes
of the completion of work in priority Area 1:
•
Reestablishment of the Carnivore Working Group that oversees
carnivore issues in Kenya.
• Detailed evaluation of cheetah conflict cases and livestock
health in Machakos by CCFK
• Future partnerships and projects are also being evaluated
as a result of the Priority 1 Area work:
i)
The Kilimanjaro Lion Project is using the KWS incident data
in determining areas for more focused lion population evaluation.
ii) The South Rift Land Owners Association (SORALO) (based in
the Magadi area of the Kajiado district) has approached CCFK
for consultation in concentrated predator monitoring concepts.
Priority
2 and 3 Areas
Work is ongoing in the two zones funded by: Cincinnati Zoo Angel Fund,
EAWLS-Stichting Netherlands, Kansas City Zoo, and in-kind donations
from Save the Elephant.
These areas include:
•
Isiolo, Marsabit, Laikipia, Samburu
• Wajir, Mandera
• Meru Conservation Area
• Tana river, Ijara, Lamu, Garissa
• Tsavo East National Park and its surrounding areas.
• Kitui, Taita Taveta
• Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu
How
