EAWLS is the focal institution for the Kenyan EAME secretariat. Each of the five countries in this WWF initiated programme stretching from Somalia to South Africa, produced National Action Plans, 2004 – 2008. In Kenya there are four ‘ecoregions’ selected for the focus of work, and overarching objectives for each of these areas have been devised. The areas are: the Lamu archipelago, Mida-Creek, Malindi, Tana River Delta, and Msambweni-Tanga At this time, EAME is searching for financial support for the various initiatives planned in each ecoregion. This will involve a forthcoming ‘launch’ of the initiative to donors, scheduled for July 6, 2005, along with small-scale independent proposals that will directly feed into the programme.
Building a foundation for a community managed marine conservation area (MCA) around Kuruwitu Vipingo, Coast Province.

EAWLS is undertaking this project aimed at building a foundation for a community managed MCA in this region. This has been initiated at the request of the Kuruwitu Conservation and Welfare Association, KCWA, a local CBO in the region who have been long battling with destructive live fish trade collectors in the region and a diminishing mangrove resource. This programme is, at this stage, a three-month pilot scheme and will include:
Community awareness raising

Marine and fisheries resource stock assessment (i.e. state of the resource at this time)

A legislative review and policy analysis, to assess the formal requirements for MCA establishment by the local community

A strategic planning workshop for the next phase of operations
